Stay at Home Mom – School Edition {A Funny Story}

Ever look around and think “Wow, how do these other mothers do it?”

I think that all the time.

Just because I am a stay at home mom does not mean that I have it all together….even IF the consensus that I should.

Now more then EVER I seem to be failing in the mom department. Why? Because I just became a SCHOOL MOM!

Most mothers probably start out strong as school moms and maybe later on in the year fizzle out…but me…I like to start at fizzle and work my way up.

You know, just for fun.

Ahem…ok maybe it’s more that I am scatterbrained and no matter how hard I try it seems I can’t win when it comes to being a school mom.

Case in Point {The Funny Little Story}

SEPTEMBER:

Wait, let’s actually back allllll the way up to June.

We had our kindergarten orientation set up for an evening way back in June. The first meeting for this mom to figure it out, learn the ropes!

Think I made it? Nope.

It’s not like we were on family holidays or anything, it was on the calendar and I just forgot to look. So finally I am laying my head on the pillow that evening and BAM.

Heart attack…..I realized I missed my FIRST School Mom activity. WINNING!

Fast forward to September:

I spent 4 hours (No Lie) penciling in all the Kindergarten & Preschool dates into my calendar so I wouldn’t forget anything.

I really didn’t want to portray “Scatterbrained Mom” right off the bat. Let’s get a few months in of a false persona before the other stay at home mom’s…or worse, the teacher figures me out ;P

Well ALL that hard work penciling everything in on the calendar didn’t help. For a whole week before school started I stared one square on the calendar. It said “First day of school – GB Man”

GB Man? GB Man…..what does GB Man mean?!? Garbage Man?

I couldn’t figure it out, until I was literally DRIVING Teo to his first day of school.

GINGERBREAD MAN!!!!! AHHHH!!!!!!! Teo has allergies and they were going to decorate and eat gingerbread men the first day of school. I was supposed to make Teo a substitute GB Man that he could decorate and eat as he couldn’t have the ones they made at school.

FAIL.

Even worse was that I didn’t have time to race to a store and buy something that would work as a replacement since this activity was going to be one of the first things they did.

Feeling horrible I held Teo, one hand on each of his shoulders, looked him in the eye and explained what I had done. “I am SOOOOOO SORRY!!!! Mommy is SO SORRY!”

What Teo did next choked me right up, he put his hands on my shoulders, looked ME in the eyes and said “It’s ok mom”. Then he turned and ran into the classroom WAY too excited for his first day of kindergarten to care about a gingerbread man. And to be honest he probably knew that whatever I would have made wouldn’t have tasted all that great anyways.

I do like baking but am not the best at baking if a rolling pin is involved.

Think my failures on day one end there? NOPE.

Next I gave the teacher Teo’s Epipen and left. I knew the Epipen was days to expiring but I had a dr appt for that afternoon to get a new one so I was on top of it right?

Well the way this story is going so far my guess is you know the answer…..NO, I was not on top of it.

When I came back to pick Teo up from school the teacher informed me the Epipen I had left with her was a YEAR old. I had grabbed the wrong one. Nuts.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL OVER, Yes! It can only get better from here.

Teo does have allergies and having had him in preschool last year I was aware of the need to have cupcakes at the ready for special school birthday celebrations.

The teacher had mentioned to me that I could leave them in the freezer at school so they could pull them out when needed. Of course that was a fantastic idea that I fully supported.

I am on it. This is my moment of redemption!!!

However I didn’t seem to understand the immediate need of the cupcakes. Because only DAYS later Teo came home and informed me he didn’t get to have a cupcake that day when the kids were celebrating a classmates birthday.

Crap.

Ok, so that night I made cupcakes and the next morning before school I iced them…not just with a knife but I PIPED the icing onto the cupcakes and added sprinkles to top it all off. Mom award in the BAG!

I managed to quickly make Teo his lunch and get us out the door on time.

Proud mommy moment, I FINALLY did something right.

Happily I brought the cupcakes into the school to hand them over to the teacher. Even though the container I had brought them in was too large for their tiny freezer I was still happy I had done something right.

Yahoo!

I left the school feeling great, Teo is at school, cupcakes are there too….today is a WIN (Even though that particular day was a half day so Teo didn’t need a packed lunch I still called it a Win)!

I was figuring this school thing out Hip Hip Hooray!

Next I drive to drop Rome off at preschool and as I am walking Rome into the building (still flying high on my wonderful mom moment I jut had) I look around at the other parents walking their own children into the building.

There was one glaring difference.

ALL the kids are wearing yellow except Rome.

It’s Yellow Day.

This is my life.

My stay at home mom, school life.

It can only get better from here!

PS….as I post this story I just realized….I need to sign my son up for hockey….today is the last day to sign up!

Here I go…..running scatterbrained all over again…..
