I’ll Hold You Forever – An Adoption Book Review (Giveaway at bottom of post)
This Children’s book is told as a conversation shared between a mother and her daughter. They start by discussing what a “Real Mom” is and continue by diving into the girls adoption story. They talk about what a “Gotcha Day” is as well as how it differs from the Adoption Day. What a great story to use for bringing up proper adoption lingo! Many people have asked me about my children’s “real” mothers and although I may not be as bothered by adoption lingo missteps as others I still want my children to understand what people mean when they say such things. This book will be a helpful tool to share your child’s story with them, safely explaining lingo throughout. I understand that not everyone likes the title “Gotcha Day” but I must admit that this book uses the term in the perfect way. A Gotcha Day would be when the child comes home to live with the family but it is a very different day from the Adoption Day. This is shared quite sweetly within this story. There is also a page at the end with suggestions for talking to your child, the only thing I would have liked to have seen would be a clear explanation of Adoption Lingo since the book does focus on this topic quite a bit. So perhaps before you sit down with your child to read the book maybe familiarize yourself with a few terms so you can comfortably discuss the topic and help your children understand their story even better! The illustrations are done by the author and are done in a watercolor format. The colors are soft and lend themselves nicely to a story told to a girl. However I would like to suggest that the information inside this tale would be a helpful way to bring up the adoption topic with young boys as well. So I would like to say a big THANK-YOU to the author Dawn Marie Hooks for writing I’ll Hold You Forever as it will help many families discuss adoption and the language that goes with it. This is a read I would recommend you check out!
