Did you know that November is National Adoption Month?

I love that there is a whole month dedicated to Adoption and Orphan advocacy :)

To CELEBRATE I will be hosting a giveaway for a hardcover copy of a NEW children’s adoption book!

I will ALSO be celebrating all month long with posts around adoption & another giveaway (check back often to find out when that one will be!)

So let’s get the celebrations started!

Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles Book Review:

Title:Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles: A Loving Story of Adoption, Chinese Culture and a Special Birthday Treat
Author: Shan-Shan Chen
Genre: Children’s Literature
Adoption Specific: Yes this book is an adoption related children’s book

This book starts by introducing you to a girl who is about to celebrate her sixth birthday. As Any excited birthday girl would do she runs to her parents room to wake them up.

This is where we learn about the girls adoption and the love that this family shares for each other.

From there she gets ready for the day and excitedly meets her mother in the kitchen to make Mei-Mei’s Birthday Noodles. This is where we begin to learn about a wonderful Chinies tradition that this family shares. We follow the mother and daughter through the kitchen as they prepare this traditional dish in an enjoyable way for the children to follow. Once the meal is prepared Mei-Mei’s birthday party begins and a second tradition is shared.

The illustrations for this book were done by Heidi Goodman and she did a beautiful job! The style was watercolor but not the subdued kind. This book had vibrant colors on each page and somehow made the food look SO YUMMY to my boys.

I LOVED this book. It was such a treat to read a book to my children that had the theme of adoption running throughout it but yet adoption was not the soul focus of the story.

This book celebrates adoption, encourages a love for family cooking AND shared the chinese culture to my boys as we read it.

When we finished the book my boys were thrilled to see the recipe written out for us so that we too could gather together in the kitchen and enjoy making this meal together as a family.

So with no encouragement needed my boys were thrilled to make this meal as a family.

It was SO FUN! I tend to shoo my boys out of the kitchen when I am in there so I must admit I was nervous to have their help but it really was a joy to share this time with them in “Mom’s Kitchen”.

My Helpers

We did make one adjustment to the recipe which I was sad to do but because of Teo’s allergies we couldn’t use egg noodles. So the noodle substitute of choice was rice noodles and it worked out great!Birthday noodles are a hit

Loved it and will make it again for sure :)

Now for the fun part….

I have one hard copy book of Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles to GIVEAWAY!
