Are you overwhelmed by the whole adoption process?
You are not alone! I think everyone hit’s that point early on in their adoption journey.
Recently I received an email asking if I ever felt this way as we traveled through our adoption process.
The short answer is Y E S!!!! It can be so overwhelming. But if you can look past the colossal list of things to do and focus in on the individual tasks things can feel less daunting.
Each couple seems to come up with their own way of dealing with it all. For us I did most of the paperwork before the adoption took place and then my husband took over after we held our child in our arms. Mark took on the rest of the paperwork (including the immigration paperwork) like a champ! I found it so helpful to be able to forget about the paperwork once I held our child in my arms. As for the “before baby” paperwork I found it helpful to create a checklist I could work from as well as setting up a good filing system.
I know it doesn’t help to say “it will all be worth it” even though that is true times TEN! Prayer was my biggest comfort during those times when there was nothing I could do but wait. Waiting for the government to sign a paper or the social worker to type up a home study. Those times when it isn’t in your control can be the hardest. Give it up to God. He can give you peace in a way no one else can.
ALSO, find someone who has traveled the road ahead of you. It can be scary to stick your neck out like that but it will be helpful. Ask your agency for some contacts near you that you could call up and meet with to hear their story and find out how they did everything. Who knows, they could turn into your new best friends!
To recap the adoption “stress less” tips:
- Create a check list to work from.
- Share the responsibilities.
- Pray.
- Connect with others that have traveled the same road ahead of you.
It is a difficult road, but the blessings received will make it all worth it…..yes…..I had to say it, God Bless!
